The Helix Nebula is the closest planetary nebula to Earth. It was formed from the explosion of an exploding star. It is estimated at being 2 Light Years across, that is half the distance between here and Proxima Centauri, the second nearest star to Earth after the Sun. HELIX NEBULA PARTNERSHIP. Helix Nebula is a new, pioneering partnership between leading IT providers and four of Europe’s biggest research centres, CERN, EMBL, ESA and PIC, charting a course towards sustainable cloud services for the research communities - the Science Cloud. The Helix Nebula is a small nebula in the Inner Orion Spur located approximately 700 light-years from Sol, below the Galactic Plane. Although the nebula was formed by a decaying star that should have created or be in the process of creating a white dwarf, there are no stars of any kind within the nebula.

The Helix Nebula, also known as The Helix, NGC 7293, is a large planetary nebula (PN) located in the constellation Aquarius. Discovered by Karl Ludwig Harding, probably before 1824, this object is one of the closest to the Earth of all the bright planetary nebulae. The estimated distance is about 215 parsecs (700 light-years). The Helix Nebula is one of the most familiar nebulae in astronomy, and it’s been nicknamed the “Eye of God”.
